Emergency Garage Door Repair

Door jammed open with the car inside, or a panel off its track after a storm? Impact Doors runs a same-day emergency service for repairs and the phone is answered 24 hours, so you're talking to the bloke who does the work rather than a call centre.

What counts as an emergency

Anything that leaves your home unsecured or your car trapped: a door stuck open overnight, a panel derailed and hanging, a snapped cable with one corner dropped, storm damage, or an attempted break-in that's bent the door or forced the lock. Ring and describe it — we triage it on the phone and tell you honestly what can be done and when.

What to do before we arrive

  • Stop using the opener. Cycling a derailed or unsprung door bends tracks and buckles panels.
  • Keep people, kids and pets clear of the opening — a door held up by a failed spring can drop.
  • If the door is stuck open and you can't secure it, move anything valuable out of the garage and lock the internal door to the house.
  • Don't try to release the opener and force the door by hand if a spring has gone — it's far heavier than it looks.

Storm season

South-east Queensland storms put wind straight into the face of a garage door, which is the largest opening in most houses. The usual damage is panels pushed in, doors blown off their tracks and water into the opener. If the door has failed but the opening is still sound, the first job is making the place secure; the repair or the replacement panel follows once we've assessed it.

Storm and flood damage, and how the insurance quote works

Water and wind are both hard on a garage door. Floodwater gets into the opener motor and the wall control and rots the bottom of the panels or the curtain from the inside, and strong wind pushes a door out of its tracks or bows the panels so the door won't run. Damage from either often isn't obvious until the door is cycled again.

A storm-damaged or flood-damaged door is usually an insurance job, and this is the canonical explanation for every suburb page that mentions one. We can give you a written quote setting out what is damaged and what it costs to repair or replace, which is what an insurer generally wants before they'll approve the work. We can't approve a claim for you, and your policy and excess are between you and your insurer — but we'll supply the documentation for the door and do the repair once it's cleared. If the door is stuck open and the house isn't secure, call us and we'll treat it as an emergency.

My garage door is stuck open — what should I do?
Stop using the opener, keep everyone clear of the opening, and move anything valuable out of the garage if you can't secure it. Then ring us and describe what happened so we can triage it on the phone.
Can you secure the door on the first visit?
Making the garage safe and secure is the first priority on any emergency call. Whether the full repair happens at the same visit depends on what's failed and what parts the door takes, and we'll tell you which it is when we've looked at it.
Do you handle storm and break-in damage?
Yes. Wind-damaged panels, doors off their tracks and forced or bent doors are common call-outs, and we can provide a written quote describing the damage for your insurer.
